If you’re craving a dessert that is rich and delicious, a black forest cake may be the answer. This cake combines layers of rich chocolate cake with cherries, whipped cream frosting and cherry liqueur. It will not take very long to make this cake, although you will need time to prepare, and the following guide will help you bake an amazing black forest cake.
You have to start with the chocolate cake, so preheat your oven to 350 F and grease two round baking pans and dust them with cocoa powder. Line the bottoms with parchment and place all of your dry ingredients (flour, sugar) into the bowl of a stand mixer and stir to combine.
Wet ingredients like your butter and eggs should be whisked into a medium bowl and the eggs must be room temperature; otherwise, your cake will not rise and the final product will not be as delicious.
Fridge-cold eggs should never be used and you must then add the wet ingredients to the dry ones and mix until the batter is very thin. Pour this batter evenly into pans and bake for about 45 minutes, after which you must allow it to cool for 10 minutes in the pans. Turn out the cake into a wire rack to cool completely and then you can move on to your whipped cream frosting.
All you have to do is whip cream and powdered sugar in a bowl with a cold whisk and then you can work on the chocolate bark, which is a very important component of this particular cake.
Melt chocolate over a boiler or microwave and then spread the melted chocolate in a thin layer on a large piece of parchment using a spatula. Roll it up and place it on a baking sheet and freeze your chocolate until it is firm, after which you can unroll it to create chocolate bark.
To make your cherry liqueur syrup, place sugar and water into a small pot and stir until you bring it to a boil. Let it simmer for one minute then remove from heat and stir in cherry liqueur and let it cool completely.
When it’s time for the assembly of your cake, cut each layer of cake in half horizontally and place one layer on a cake stand. Brush it with cherry syrup and top it with 1 cup of whipped cream and after you spread it evenly, you can then top it with 1 cup of cherries, which you can gently press into the whipped cream and repeat this step with the remaining layers and frost. Lastly, decorate the cake with your chocolate bark and shavings and you will have yourself a delicious black forest cake!
